Microsoft’s new operating system Windows 10 S launched
Microsoft has launched its latest operating system, Windows 10 S, which is claimed to be faster and more streamlined than Windows 10.
However, there are restrictions. 10 S will only be available on new PCs and not until later in the summer. It will not be possible to buy it separately and install it on existing machines.
Another restriction is that it will only be possible to run applications purchased from the Windows Store. Similarly, you will only be able to install games from the Windows Store.
Browsing in the early stages will only be possible through Microsoft Edge, but that is expected to change once other browsers are made available through the Windows Store.
Microsoft’s newest laptop, the Microsoft Surface, will be the first machine to be loaded with the new operating system, but it is also expected to be available on new machines from Microsoft PC-making partners, making it possible for the system to span both the affordable and high-end sectors of the market.
The new system has been targeted at the education sector, to compete with the Google Chromebook and offer fast start-up and affordable access to programmes specifically needed by that sector.
One of the reasons Microsoft has given for the restriction to apps and other software via the Windows Store, is that it will make sure machines keep their speed and battery life for longer. It will also keep machines more secure from malware.
A feature of the new 10 S system is that it includes the ability to set up machines using a USB drive with preconfigured options. Windows 10 S will detect the key and customize all settings ready for a school.
