Competition for Google Chrome?
Can an opensource browser compete with Chrome?
The latest version of Mozilla Firefox is a significant overhaul and Mozilla is claiming it is both twice as fast as six months ago and uses 30% less memory than Google’s Chrome.
As a non-profit organisation Mozilla relies entirely on donations, while Chrome is backed by Google’s considerable financial resources.
Chrome has dominated search engine usage since 2010.
But Firefox has its devoted fans too and the developers of Firefox Quantum, the latest version are hoping it will win back some of those who migrated to Chrome.
“This is by far the biggest reboot we’ve ever done,” said Mark Mayo, senior vice president of Firefox at Mozilla.
One of the features that has always distinguished the Firefox ethos is its commitment to user privacy and security. This makes it more popular in Europe, where people are seen to be more concerned about privacy.
It is the ethical stance of Firefox that might just give it the edge in its bid to win more of a share of browser users, of which it currently has around 90 million.
Reviewers seem to like it as you can see here, and reports are that those who have tried Quantum, which was made available on November 14, say it has lived up to its expectations, so the signs may be good for it to increase market share.
You can download Quantum for free from the official Mozilla site here.
